This may seem like a pretty trivial topic BUT I had this conversation a few weeks back with a company and they seemed a bit shocked over the concept but then recalled some instances where they had experienced just this. I told them it is not the same as not rewarding a solid employee who deserves financial rewards for contribution, it’s the upfront clues during the hiring process that can save you down the line. This can happen at any level.

In some instances in a time crunch, companies often end up hiring the wrong employees that can cost them heavily in terms of the overall productivity of the organization. No matter how skilled an employee is if their true motivation towards working is money only, it is highly likely that they are not going to produce the results that you desire. Thus, it is important to focus your efforts on finding the right candidates that will help in propelling your organization forward.

If people come for money, they will leave for money

Here are the 4 crucial signs I have noted over the years that indicate a candidate is just money motivated and will turn out to be toxic to your company or have you starting your search process all over again:

  1. The employee constantly seems disinterested in the work

An employee’s enthusiasm is what drives them towards producing outstanding results. One of the most crucial factors that indicate an employee is just money motivated is the way they perceive the work being assigned to them. If they constantly seem disinterested in their work, chances are high that they are not passionate about their work and are only pursuing it due to the money being offered to them.

Often times employees leave because they believe that they are not being paid enough, but usually, they are not as passionate about the work they are doing. It is always best to reevaluate such employees, as they can create a bad influence on other employees as well. How can you expect an employee who is not passionate about their work to produce excellent results for your business? Get to the root of the problem.

  1. Lack of enthusiasm for the new job

It is common for candidates appearing for interviews to seem excited about the new opportunities that lie ahead of them. If a candidate, however, does not seem eager or excited, chances are that they might not be as interested in the job but have come just for the sake of the money being offered especially if they are asking about how soon they can get a bonus or raise.

When a candidate is excited about a job, their enthusiasm can be seen in the way they respond and their body language says the same. Thus, it is important for hiring managers to keep a keen eye and observe the candidate’s behavior in order to find the ideal candidate. Candidates that lack passion can never bring positive results for your business, nor will they ever go beyond their capacity. Such candidates will soon run off to some other company to fulfill their money cravings. Be sure they believe in your mission!

If you find that a candidate appearing for an interview seems clueless and has no idea of your company, chances are that they have no interest in the job or the company, and are only here for the money. Candidates that are truly passionate always dig deeper before appearing for an interview. They try to gain as much information about the company as possible, its missions and values in order to get a better understanding of the company.

On the other hand, candidates that are only money motivated will never go beyond their capacity and some will be overly concerned about compensation BEFORE they get to the offer stage. They will only do the work that has been assigned to them, and will never think of going beyond their potential. Such candidates are never going to benefit your company.  You need to be wise when making your selection, as the progress of your company depends on the candidates you choose.

  1. Their resume shows that they have switched jobs too often and not as a contractor

They do not take into account the market, their contribution and company strategy. It is crucial for hiring managers to make sure they are not hiring money motivated candidates for their company in this current market.
